Many amateur golfers wonder if they hit “far enough” with the driver. However, the real question may be elsewhere: am I driving smartly?

Thanks to the data from the Arccos Driving Distance Report 2025, which analyzes over 6.5 million tee shots on the course, we now have a very clear view of what makes a good drive. Forget simulators or discussions at the driving range: here, we're talking about real play, in real conditions.

Let’s discover together what the numbers say… and what you can do with them to improve.

Average driving distance: a surprising stagnation

📊 An average that hardly changes

Since 2018, the average driving distance for men has gone from 224.0 to 224.7 yards (205.5 meters). For women, it has even slightly decreased, from 179.2 to 176.2 yards (161.1 meters).

👉 In short: without specific work, you will not spontaneously gain meters. Progress comes neither from luck nor experience, but from targeted training.

📈 The impact of age on distance

The report shows a striking gap:

  • A player aged 15 to 19 years hits on average 241.6 yards.
  • At 70 years old, this average drops to 190.5 yards.

This represents a loss of 51 yards, or more than 45 meters on average over the decades.

The other side of driving: accuracy

🎯 Less distance, but straighter

The paradox is that older players — despite their loss of power — are more accurate:

  • At 70 years old, a man hits 56.5% of fairways.
  • At 20 years old, this accuracy falls to 39%.

The reason is simple: less speed = less dispersion. Less variation, therefore more consistency.

🧠 Experience also plays a role

This trend is also found among women:

  • Women in their sixties hit 62.2% of fairways.
  • Those in their twenties only hit 45.1%.

Handicap and driving: a direct link to performance

📏 The higher your handicap, the more distance you lose

The report is clear:

  • A player with a handicap < 5 hits on average 250 yards.
  • A player with a handicap > 30 drops to 184.9 yards.

A difference of 65 yards (nearly 60 meters), due to technical factors: quality of contact, angle of attack, impact speed…

⚠️ But the real weakness is elsewhere…

The major danger for high-handicap players does not come from distance… but from unplayable balls:

  • 45% of their drives end up in a penalty area or require a re-centering shot.
  • Among very good players (<5 handicap), this figure falls to 12%.

In other words: accuracy and strategy are worth more than raw power.

Concrete levers to improve your driving

1. Favor the “playable” over the “perfect”

No need to systematically aim for the fairway. A light rough is better than an OB or lost ball. The goal: stay in play.

2. Look for smart distance gains

Forget raw speed. To gain meters efficiently, focus on:

  • Contacting the center of the clubface.
  • A positive angle of attack.
  • An optimized speed in the impact zone, not over the entire swing.

3. Be realistic in your expectations

You’re not playing on the PGA Tour. Compare yourself:

  • To yourself last week.
  • To a player your age and handicap.

And set a simple goal: fewer lost balls, more controlled holes.

In conclusion: play smart, not heroic

What the Arccos 2025 report teaches us is that effective driving is not a question of age or innate talent, but of approach. The best amateurs aren't those who hit the hardest, but those who:

  • know their strengths and limits,
  • play smart,
  • reduce major errors.

So, on your next round, ask yourself one question at the tee:

Does this shot give me a chance to play the next one?
