Mastering golf involves much more than just pure technique. Your swing may be sharp, your putting precise, but if you don’t take the game format into account, you risk sabotaging your performance. Each competition format — strokeplay, stableford, matchplay, or scramble — imposes its own rules of the game... and its own strategic rules.
Understanding these differences and adapting your approach is one of the keys to scoring lower, better managing pressure, and above all, enjoying the course more.
Strokeplay is the most classic and rigorous form of golf. Here, every shot is counted, no forgiveness. Your final score reflects the sum of your strokes over 18 holes. No room for error: a bad hole can be costly.
Stableford awards you points based on your score on each hole, which radically changes the dynamic. A double bogey or worse = 0 points, but a birdie or a par scores big. Result: you can afford more aggressiveness on certain holes.
In matchplay, you face an opponent hole by hole. The total strokes don’t matter: only the winner of each hole counts. It’s a psychological as well as technical duel.
Scramble, often played in teams of 2 or 4 players, relies on the best ball on each shot. This allows for a more relaxed play, but also requires real strategic coordination.
Understanding the rules is the foundation. But knowing how to adapt your game depending on the format is what moves you into the realm of strategic players. You may have the same clubs and the same technique from one round to the next, but your choices on the course must evolve according to the format.

Too often, golfers approach each round in the same way, regardless of the format. Yet, each format has its own codes, and ignoring them means missing out on a huge performance lever.
By integrating these logics into your preparation, mental approach, and shot choices, you can approach any competition with a relevant game plan.
Remember: golf is not just a game of gestures, it is also a game of intelligence.
