The game strategy in golf involves establishing a thoughtful action plan for each hole, and more broadly for the entire course. It takes into account many parameters: the terrain layout, hazards, weather, your level, your strengths, your weaknesses… and even your mindset.
Contrary to what many think, playing golf well does not depend solely on technique. What distinguishes an average player from a good one is their ability to make the right choices at the right time.
A good player prepares their course even before the first tee. Preliminary analysis helps identify potential traps and determine the best playing zones.
Before starting, study the scorecard and the course map:
This will allow you to know where to attack, where to play safely, and what to expect.
Each hole requires a specific approach:
A good game strategy is also a matter of anticipation. You don’t play a shot "just to play it," you play for the next shot.
Before each shot, ask yourself this question:
“Where should I place my ball to make my next shot easier?”
This mindset will help you avoid costly mistakes. For example, if a green is surrounded by hazards, it's better to aim for a comfortable approach zone at 80 meters rather than rough at 30 meters.
Avoid the trap of “I always take my driver off the tee.” Your goal is not to hit as far as possible, but to place the ball in a strategic zone. This might mean hitting a iron off the tee on a narrow hole, or preferring a hybrid for a re-centering shot.
Sometimes it's more beneficial to make a thoughtful bogey than a heroic double bogey. Playing it safe doesn’t mean playing timidly: it means making the most reasonable choice to limit damage. In case of bad lie, obstructive tree, or strong wind, accept not to attack.
The opposite is also true: some situations warrant a calculated risk. If you are well placed, with a good angle of attack and few hazards, don’t hesitate to aim for the flag. But always keep a backup option in mind.
Strategy also relies on excellent knowledge of your own distances. Too many golfers overestimate their distances. Be honest: a 7-iron that sometimes goes 150 m isn’t better than a reliable club that goes 140 m every time.
Take the time to note the average distance of each club during practice (using a rangefinder or launch monitor), and adjust it based on:
It is a fundamental strategic tool.
It's a habit many amateurs neglect, even though it’s a huge lever for improvement. Tracking your statistics allows you to:
For example, if your stats show you miss 60% of greens in regulation on the left, this might indicate:
Here are some simple yet very useful statistics to collect:
StatisticWhy it’s useful% of fairways hitEvaluate your driving accuracy% of greens in regulationMeasure your consistency on approach shotsNumber of putts per holeTrack effectiveness on the greenApproaches within 100 mIdentify your precision level in the red zoneUp & Down successEvaluate your short game around the green
There are stat tracking apps (like Teech Golf 📱😉) that make this process fun and automatic.
Suppose your stats reveal:
This indicates that approach shots and putting should be your training priorities, and that on the course, it might be better to aim for safe zones rather than attacking every flag at all costs.
Wind, rain, or heat greatly influence ball flight. For example:
Your strategy must therefore constantly adjust.
A good player stays focused even when their initial plan doesn’t work. If you miss a tee shot or land in a bunker, reassess the situation, refocus, and adjust your plan.
Creating your own course notebook allows you to:
It’s an excellent way to capitalize on your experience for lasting improvement.
Adopting a true golf game strategy means moving away from improvisation towards a logic of progress. This doesn’t mean playing like a robot, but making informed decisions, based on course analysis, weather, your current form, and your personal statistics.
As you play more consciously, your scores will improve… and so will your enjoyment of the game.
