Golf is a sport of precision and concentration, but it can quickly become a mental headache. If you’re an amateur, you’ve surely already experienced that moment when your brain is boiling before hitting the ball: “Position my hands well,” “Don’t lift my head too early,” “Keep my elbow tucked,” “Don’t force it,” etc. The result? A hesitant swing, a missed strike, and growing frustration.

In our latest video made in partnership with the French Golf Federation (ffgolf), we address one of the 12 deadly sins of the amateur golfer: thinking about too many things before swinging. And most importantly, we explain how to simplify your mental approach to improve your game.

🧠 Too many thoughts kill the swing

When starting out (and even when you have a good level), we tend to want to control everything. Every shot becomes a complex equation, and the more we think, the tenser we get. But a good swing is not analyzed in real time, it is experienced!

Think of the best golfers in the world: they don’t repeat ten instructions before hitting. They have one key point in mind, and they stick to it.

The problem with mental overload?

  1. It blocks the fluidity of the movement.
  2. It creates doubt and hesitation.
  3. It prevents a natural and relaxed swing.

It’s like trying to drive a car while reading the driving manual at the same time: it’s impossible to be efficient and relaxed.

🎯 The key: a single point of focus

The solution is simple but requires mental training: focus on a single point of attention before swinging. Rather than trying to control everything, choose one central element and focus solely on it.

Here are some examples of effective points of attention:

  • The finish: Visualize yourself finishing your swing in balance, like a pro.
  • The tempo: Think of a smooth rhythm, without rushing.
  • The contact: Imagine your club passing through the ball purely.
  • The impact: Visualize precisely where you want to hit the ball.

The idea is to keep a simple reference and stick to it. By reducing your mental focus, your body will be able to execute the swing more instinctively and naturally.

🏌️‍♂️ Practice: the single focus exercise

To integrate this principle, here is an exercise you can test at your next practice session:

  1. Choose your point of attention before each shot. For example, “I focus only on my finish.”
  2. Make a practice swing thinking about this single element.
  3. Execute your shot while remaining focused only on this point.
  4. Evaluate the result, but without judging yourself too harshly.

Over time, this approach will become natural and you will quickly feel the difference in your game.
