When summer is in full swing and the thermometer rises above 30 °C, many golfers hesitate to take out their clubs. However, with a few simple adjustments, it is entirely possible to keep playing without suffering from the heat. Whether you are a seasoned competitor or a passionate amateur, the heatwave should not deprive you of your enjoyment. Here are 6 essential tips to stay effective on the course, while protecting your body and your game.

1. Opt for the cart: conserve your energy

When the sun is beating down hard, walking 18 holes with a bag on your back quickly becomes exhausting. To play smart, choose the electric cart.

Why is it a good idea?

  • Avoid unnecessary fatigue, especially at the end of the round
  • Reduce your exposure to the sun between shots
  • Allow yourself to better focus on your game

Even if you are a fan of walking to stay fit, remember that heat requires a different management of your energy. The cart then becomes a strategic ally.

2. Protect your head and skin: create your cool cocoon

When you play in full sun, the head is one of the most exposed areas to heatstroke. Two pieces of equipment become essential: a wide-brimmed hat and a parasol umbrella.

The right UV protection combo:

  • Wide-brimmed hat to protect the neck, face and ears
  • UV parasol (to attach to your bag or hold between shots): it creates a portable shade bubble

Bonus:

These accessories also help maintain a more stable body temperature, which promotes better clarity on the course.

3. Dress in loose, technical clothing

Knowing how to dress to play golf in the heat is not just a matter of style. It is a performance strategy.

The criteria to prioritize:

  • Breathable technical fabrics: recycled polyester, microfibers, mesh
  • Loose clothing: to promote air circulation
  • Light long sleeves: against sunburn (yes, even in summer!)

Good textile equipment protects you better than an excess of poorly applied sunscreen. Many brands offer outfits with anti-UV treatment, ideal for playing several hours without risk.

4. Hydrate like an athlete

In intense heat, drinking water is not enough. To avoid dehydration and maintain your level of play, you also need to replenish your electrolytes.

The golfer’s hydration kit for summer:

  • 1.5 to 2 liters of water minimum (to be spread out over the entire round)
  • 1 isotonic drink (rich in minerals, like a recovery drink or homemade drink based on salt, lemon, sugar)
  • Portable cooler or insulated bottles to keep your drinks cool

You can also check out the Nutrigolf masterclass on hydration to better understand the specific needs of athletes exposed to the sun.

5. Adapt your game to summer conditions

The heat does not only affect your body: it also changes the ball’s behavior. Ignoring this can distort all your distance and impact benchmarks.

What changes when it’s hot:

Lighter air = ball flies farther

Heat decreases air density, thus resistance: your ball travels a few meters farther, especially with long clubs.

Harder ground = more aggressive bounce

Dry fairways act like trampolines. The ball rolls much more after impact, sometimes 20 to 40 meters farther.

How to adjust your strategy?

  • Aim for the front of the green, not the flag
  • Favor lower balls to control the roll
  • Recalculate your average distances club by club

These are micro-adjustments that can make all the difference in your score.

6. Listen to your body, adjust your pace

In the heat, the risks of heatstroke or severe dehydration are real. Even if you are well prepared, your body’s sensations must guide your pace of play.

Warning signs:

  • Dizziness, nausea, sudden fatigue
  • Dry mouth, headaches, chills
  • Less concentration or coordination

In these cases, do not hesitate to stop your round. No score is worth risking your health.

Conclusion: playing golf in summer is possible (and even enjoyable)

Golf is a sport of mental as well as physical endurance. In summer, knowing how to adapt becomes a major asset. Thanks to these simple yet effective tips, you can continue to improve, have fun, and nurture your passion even under the July or August sun.

Never forget: comfort, strategy, and safety are the three pillars of good play in extreme conditions.
