Most PGA Tour tournaments are played in Strokeplay as explained a little earlier. Whether it’s the Masters of Augusta, the PGA Championship, The Open, the US Open for the 4 majors of the PGA Tour, or most tournaments on the tour, this is the format that prevails and that you will therefore see most often throughout the year.
This is not the most widespread type of tournament on the different tours despite the fact that it is one of the most entertaining formats. Today on the tour, there is only one matchplay format tournament left, the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play which takes place every year in Austin. The prize money for this tournament is 20 million dollars and Sam Burns won in 2023. This year marked the last edition of this tournament and it is therefore probably the end of this format on the American tour.
Scramble tournaments are not the most common on the tour, however there are two main ones:
The PNC Championship is a professional golf tournament played over two days at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida. It is organized by the PGA Tour Champions and is open to major champions and PGA Tour Champions tournament winners who play with a family member. The format used, as you have understood, is 2-person Scramble. It took place earlier this year, in early December, and it was Team Langer who won with –25 ahead of Team Duval (–23). Team Singh finished in 3rd place (–22). Team Woods, consisting of Tiger and his son Charlie and the big attraction of the week, finished in 5th place (–19).
The Grant Thornton Invitational took place from December 8 to 10, 2023 at the Tiburón Golf Club in Naples (Florida) for the first time this year. This competition gathered 16 mixed teams of 2 golfers for a total prize of 4 million dollars in the form of a two-person Scramble. For this first edition it was Lydia Ko and Jason Day who won.
What I will call hybrid tournaments are tournaments that mix several of the formats I presented to you just above. I am especially thinking of the famous Ryder Cup or the Presidents Cup.
It is the biggest golf event on the planet which takes place every two years. The best European players and their American counterparts battle for three days of competition.
The first two days are reserved for doubles (4 sessions of 4 matches, one in the morning and one in the afternoon), while on Sunday the 12 members of each team meet head to head.
The doubles are played according to two formats:
The singles are played in classic matchplay.
There are 28 points in total at stake. At the end of each match, a pair or a player can win one point or half a point in case of a tie at the 18th hole. The first team to accumulate more than 14 points wins the Ryder Cup. In case of a tie (14/14), the winner of the previous edition keeps their trophy.
The Presidents Cup is a golf trophy contested every two years by the United States and the rest of the world in a team tournament, excluding Europe since they already contest the Ryder Cup.
The format is identical to the Ryder Cup, the only difference being that there are 5 foursomes matches and 5 four-ball matches on Friday instead of four in the case of the Ryder Cup. Saturday’s day with 4 foursomes matches and 4 four-ball matches and Sunday with the 12 singles matchplay are identical to the Ryder Cup. Therefore, there are 30 points at stake and the first team to obtain more than 15½ points wins the tournament. In case of a tie (15/15), the winner of the previous edition retains their trophy.
And there you go, you know everything about the different game formats and the major tournaments most inspired by them.
